Liz was rescued from a hoarding situation by HSPPR in Calhan in January 2026 with 15 other dogs, skinny, timid and in need of medical care. She was quite shut down when she joined us, worried about everything in this big new world she’d landed in. We let her decompress on her own time, requiring nothing of her. Within a couple of weeks she was ready to leave the house and yard for short walks down the alley and eventually she made it clear she was interested in going around the block.
Three months later, she isn’t up for prolonged human touch just yet, though she will finally approach to take treats from still, quiet people. She loves lying in the shade in the yard, she’s had a dentistry to remove painful teeth, she’s on pain meds for arthritis, has gained weight and we are hoping she’ll reach the point soon that she can settle enough to get acupuncture.
Every week there’s an additional step forward: Last week she barked to demand breakfast when things were moving too slowly and she has joined the other dogs in defending their yard from squirrels.
