Ruby Jean, a dog of unknown parentage (most think she looks like a stumpy-legged Newfoundland), had a loving owner, and he died. The son hired a cleaner to dig through what the cleaner assumed was an empty apartment, only to discover some time into the job a dog living upstairs. A completely blind dog. A very sweet dog. The son said he’d be taking it to the shelter soon, the cleaner couldn’t bear that thought, knowing at this point in society’s evolution, when people are ditching long-time pets because they don’t want to pay for a pet sitter during summer vacation, an old blind dog would be confused, panicked and then euthanized by strangers. We got her in April 2026–the most courageous, trusting, comical dog ever. She settled in perfectly, made friends with all the other sanctuary dogs, and she loves her walks, loves visitors, loves just being alive. We’d hoped we could restore her sight through surgery, but the animal eye doc learned through testing Rube’s retinas are nonfunctional so no surgery. We were disappointed but she couldn’t care less. She’s all about living life fully.
